The Business of Keeping America Running: Stocks Behind Essential Services

You take out the trash. You turn on the tap. You flip the light switch. You never think about it.

Someone has to run all of that. Five US companies do the heavy work: Waste Management (WM), Republic Services (RSG), American Water Works (AWK), NextEra Energy (NEE) and Duke Energy (DUK).

People pay for these services in good years and bad. That is why investors call them “essential service” stocks.

Why Essential Service Stocks?

  • Demand stays steady in a recession.
  • Prices go up slowly with inflation and rate approvals.
  • Most pay dividends.
  • The business is hard to copy. Nobody builds a second water pipe network.

The trade-off is slow growth. These stocks rarely double in a year. They aim for steady gains.

Conclusion

Essential service stocks will not make you rich overnight. They can protect your money when markets fall and pay you while you wait.

  • Want steady growth: look at WM or RSG. Both price their services well and earn more each year.
  • Want income: look at Duke Energy. It has the highest yield here.
  • Want faster growth and accept more risk: look at NextEra.
  • Want water exposure: AWK is a solid business. Analysts rate it Hold, and the merger adds uncertainty.

Do not put all your money in one stock. Mix two or three of these with other holdings
